WiGo Trips is on a mission to inspire others to have their own life-changing adventures in countries across the world. So we’ve reached out to travellers across America to find out more about what has inspired their journeys. This week, we are speaking to Kira Brereton, an American attorney who has travelled luxuriously all over the world. She has been to more than 50 different countries on 5 different continents and travels regularly to new destinations each and every year. Learning More From The World Traveling gives you firsthand experience of the world. In the West, it is hard to appreciate the reality of the world when it is only seen through a single lens. For Kira, traveling opened her up to a whole new way of living and being that she had not considered before. Indeed, she learned more about cultures around the world than she could have if she had simply stayed in America. She explained: “It is important to try to understand the narratives and different perspectives of others so that you can form your own opinion of how things should be perceived. When you travel you get to hear the stories of the people who are hidden. And you get to also share the stories of the people that are hidden. “I travel based upon what I learn. For example, while I was in Egypt, I learned about how the Sudanese, which are the modern day Nubian people intercepted with the Egyptian empire. I learned about how much of a power struggle the two empires had in history. I also learned about the strong contribution the Sudanese made to the Egyptian empire. “Learning things about the countries I visited made me want to learn more. It made me want to dig deeper and try to find the stories that people are not elevating. I think there’s power in that.” Letting Go of Fear When it comes to travelling, fear can manifest itself in many ways. For some, it can appear as a lack of motivation to go the places you may have considered before. It can appear in the minds of other people who believe that traveling is inherently dangerous. Quite often, fear is expressed in the negative stories of other people who can think of a million reasons and examples of why traveling may go bad. Kira said that a big part of travelling is letting go of the fears that hold you back. Her message is simple: do not let the perceptions of others cloud your judgement when it comes to experiencing the world. She said: “Often times you hear things from people who are pinning locations in a negative light and they are viewing things from their own personal lens and experiences. However, you could go to the same location and have a tremendously incredible time. “You can’t let the fears and negative experiences of other black travellers limit you from having your own incredible life experiences. There are also so many resources now that make it easy to travel solo. For example there are many expat groups overseas that you can tap into if you feel uncomfortable being out on your own. You can also get an idea from them about the kind of places where it makes sense for people to travel solo and meet up with people.” Now It’s Over To You Kira’s journey is truly inspirational. Not only has she experienced much of what the world has to offer, but she has also taken a leading role in helping others to have their own journeys through her website www.kirabrereton.com. However, Kira’s story can also become your story. Even if you are afraid to take solo trips overseas, the truth is that there are many different ways of experiencing the world.
